Walking Tour in Historical Garfield Park with Indiana Landmarks and Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis

Indiana Landmarks and Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis partner with the Garfield Park Neighborhood Association and Friends of Garfield Park, Inc., to present the walking tour of the historic city park and the neighborhood that surrounds it, with a stop at one of the area’s charming vintage homes on Thursday, September 14 from 5:30 pm - 8:15 pm (90-minute tours; start times vary). The tour begins at the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Walking tour participants will visit the Victorian home of Garfield Park neighbors, Page and Russ Clemens, at 869 Southern Avenue, an ongoing restoration project. The couple turned a hillside into a perennial garden and installed a brick patio with a firepit in the back yard, where they added a raised-bed garden, bee hives, and a chicken coop with six happy hens. The Clemenses love how the home’s wrapping porches and balcony reinforce the connection to nature. The 1865 house, at the corner of East Southern and Allen avenues, faces the south side of Garfield Park.
